Course Description

Trauma affects how people communicate, regulate emotions, and engage with support — often in ways that are easy to misread as "non-compliance" or "difficult behaviour." Trauma-Informed Care Foundations equips NDIS and aged care support workers with the knowledge and practical skills to recognise the signs of trauma, understand its impact on the brain and behaviour, and respond in ways that build safety and trust rather than re-traumatise.

Through scenario-based learning and interactive checklists, this course walks participants through the five core principles of trauma-informed practice — safety, trust, choice, collaboration, and empowerment — and shows how to apply them in everyday support interactions, from intake through to ongoing care. Mapped to the NDIS Practice Standards (Core Modules 1–4) and Code of Conduct, it's designed to be immediately relevant to frontline work, not theoretical.

Delivered as a self-paced, interactive online module with a scenario-based assessment and certificate of completion.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain what trauma is and how it affects the brain, body, and behaviour
  • Recognise common signs and triggers of trauma in a support work context
  • Apply the five principles of trauma-informed care (safety, trust, choice, collaboration, empowerment) to real interactions
  • Distinguish trauma responses from "non-compliant" or "difficult" behaviour, and adjust their approach accordingly
  • Use de-escalation and grounding techniques that avoid re-traumatisation
  • Identify when and how to escalate concerns in line with organisational policy and the NDIS Code of Conduct
